Sentinel Dome
If fantastic views are what you want and you don't have the energy or time to hike to the top of Half Dome, Clouds Rest or other high places, then Sentinel Dome may be just what you are looking for. With only a few hundred feet of elevation gain and 2.2 mile round trip, Sentinel Dome makes for the perfect getaway. Standing at an elevation of 8122' it is nearly as tall as neighboring Half Dome (8836') so the views from there are quite similar. Join our family as we journey to the top.
We have been wanting to get away for a while and finally decided to head for the Wawona Campground for the weekend. After setting up camp we decided to take the kids out to Sentinel Dome.
The weather was in the 70s and a slight breeze was blowing. A perfect day!
We aren't out to set any land speed record, so we pause often to check out all of those things that toddlers find interesting.
Nearing the base of Sentinel Dome, the first site of Half Dome comes into view through the trees.
Hannah races to the top!
Mommy and Sarah aren't too far behind.
While Hannah explores the top (with Dad's watchful eye) Mommy and Sarah reach the top as well. Half Dome, North Dome and Clouds Rest can be seen across the canyon, while Mount Hoffmann, Cathedral Peak and Mount Conness (to name a few) can be seen off in the distant.
Sadly a few months ago, the popular and long-standing (but dead) Jeffrey Pine that stood guard on Sentinel Dome was toppled by some careless tourists. This is how it looks now.
One last wind-blown picture before we head back to camp. Until Next time…
