Four-Mile Trail
In September of 2001 I decided to hike the Four-Mile Trail from Yosemite Valley to Glacier point and back. I loaded up my daypack with all the essentials…except my bug netting! I never would have guessed that I'd need it in September!
Thankfully the bugs decreased as the altitude increased! Stopping to enjoy the views now became a pleasant experience.
The trail enters the cover of the trees now and starts to switchback up the hill. When you hear of rock slides from Glacier Point, this is likely the place. I made great progress through this section!
From the breaks in the forest you can get great views of Yosemite falls…minus the falls! This late in the season, the falls dry up.
I'm not sure what this rock formation is, but it looks like a finger pointing to the direction of the trail…up!
Finally Glacier Point comes into view. Only a half mile to go. I've seen old pictures from around this location with a car on that rock!
Now at Glacier point it was time to look around and take some pictures. I also played park ranger for some curious tourists. Answering questions varying from "Where is El Capitan" to "Where are the cables on Half Dome". This is the view from the railing at Glacier Point looking down to Yosemite Valley. It's almost as good as the view from Half Dome. Certainly much easier to get to!
Another view from Glacier Point. Looking left to right: North Dome, Basket Dome, Mt. Hoffman, Clouds Rest and Half Dome to name a few (the ones I know).
Finding a quiet place to eat lunch is very difficult at Glacier Point. I found one with a great view. After eating lunch and resting for an hour or so, I headed back down the trail to Yosemite Valley, probably around noon. It was much warmer now and I was looking at the Merced River all the way down and thinking how refreshing it would be! Got down to the valley in about two hours and took a soak in the river…a perfect ending to a great day!
